Workshops¶
Pre-conference workshops specifically directed at early career researchers will be offered on Sunday, September 6, prior to the main conference. They will be hosted at the central conference venue. The workshop The state of phase-sensitive radioglaciology will run from 9 am to 5 pm, with a lunch break from 12 pm to 1 pm. The workshops Exploring Machine Learning for Radioglaciology and Software-Defined Radar - What It Can and Can’t Do will run from 1 pm to 5 pm. All participants are invited to a joint lunch from 12 pm to 1 pm. It is also possible to attend The state of phase-sensitive radioglaciology in the morning and one of the other two workshops in the afternoon. Exploring Machine Learning for Radioglaciology (Leah Sophie Muhle, University of Tübingen, Germany)
The field of machine learning (ML) is growing rapidly, and it is hard to keep track with the model types on offer and to judge which of them could actually help answering one’s research questions.
This workshop will provide an overview: which families of ML models exist (e.g. convolutional neural networks, generative models, …), which types of problem each is suited to (e.g. classification, inference, …) and how these approaches have already been applied to radioglaciology. To move from concepts to practice, we will work through a few Jupyter notebook examples together. The workshop closes with a discussion of further opportunities for ML in radioglaciology.
Format: An introductory presentation followed by hands-on examples and a closing discussion. Please bring a laptop capable of running Jupyter notebooks.
The state of phase-sensitive radioglaciology (Falk Oraschewski, Geological Survey (GEUS), Copenhagen, Denmark)
Over the past decade, phase-sensitive radar systems have opened up several new domains for radar applications in glaciology. In this workshop, we aim to bring the phase-sensitive radar community together to review where we stand. After getting to know each other and updating us on recent projects and new developments, we will break into groups to identify key achievements, ongoing challenges, and untapped potential for collaboration. Finally, we will regroup around common interests to kick-start potential new projects.
Everybody – and every idea – is welcome, whether you are already an active user of phase-sensitive radars (not only the ApRES!) or would like to use it in your future research and want to get involved. You are also free to join for just the morning, before other workshops, or in the afternoon, as your travel plans permit.
Software-Defined Radar - What It Can and Can’t Do (Johannes Noll, University of Tübingen, Germany)
In software-defined radar systems, much of the signal processing is performed in the digital domain rather than the analog domain. This makes such systems highly flexible and opens up new possibilities for radioglaciology, but also introduces certain limitations. In this workshop, we will explore this new technology and discuss:
how software-defined radars differ from conventional radars used in glaciology in terms of system architecture,
what is needed to successfully operate a software-defined radar,
which waveforms can be transmitted and why they suit different situations,
your experiences from working with different radar systems.
The workshop will be a mix of presentations, discussions, and independent work. For the latter, we recommend bringing a laptop capable of running Jupyter notebooks.
